Nation Revisited

An occasional e-mail to friends. # 56, May 2009

A spanner in the works

The BNP have launched their Euro election campaign under the unlikely image of Sir Winston Churchill, a lifelong global imperialist and later day believer in a United States of Europe; at least for the mainland. He saw America as the heir to the British Empire and he was never an insular nationalist.

Apart from immigration the BNP have got some very strange policies. They have embraced Washington’s “war on terror” and see every Muslim as a suicide bomber but they condone Israeli terrorism against the Arabs. They are pushing a born-again Christian agenda from the backwoods of America. And they blame all our problems on Europe when they know that the economic crisis is worldwide.

The BNP’s “ourselves alone” policy is an impossible fantasy for a country of 60 million souls that had not fed itself for two hundred years. One or two BNP deputies returned to the European Parliament will not wreck it any more than twelve UKIP MEPs did. The majority of British people will vote for mainstream parties that are committed to Europe.

The next government is likely to restrict immigration because of the extensive press campaign and the public outcry resulting from the East European influx. The BNP has worried the Establishment by winning local elections and gaining a seat on the GLA, but it will be our collapsing economy that finally ends half a century of cheap labour exploitation.

Shrinking production and rising unemployment will dominate the next decade. Britain has got the worst deficit of any G20 country and the only way out is a steep rise in taxes and cuts in government spending. That means that all of us will suffer a drop in our standard of living. Nobody can predict the long-term consequences. It may be that the dominance of the old gang parties will be challenged. But a party with unsustainable go-it-alone policies will not be trusted to take over the reins of government.

To be taken seriously the BNP must drop economic policies that were already obsolete in the Sixties. Their fears of being submerged in a federal Europe are groundless.  Britain needs to be part of a viable economic area in order to achieve self-sufficiency. If they get MEPs elected they should take the opportunity to defend British interests. If the EU needs reforming they should reform it, and if legislation needs changing they should change it. But there’s no point in going to Brussels just to throw a spanner in the works.

Nothing different about Obama

The world post G20 looks just the same. America and Britain are still broke and trying to persuade the rest of the world to print more money. President Obama has lost interest in Iraq but he is still chasing Taliban insurgents around the Northwest Frontier. This old-fashioned colonial war is intended to provide security to America and Europe. Destroying villages with missiles is supposed to stop the unemployed sons of immigrants from cooking up explosives in their mothers’ kitchens. And getting our servicemen killed or mutilated by roadside mines is meant to stop Saudi and Egyptian suicide pilots from crashing airliners into American skyscrapers. Obama and Brown need to explain how this works.

The Obamas are an attractive family that delight crowds and provide media cameramen with first class footage. They are exactly what the public relations industry ordered; well dressed, well presented and as an added bonus they are nonwhite and therefore infinitely marketable to the Third World. But there it ends. There is nothing different about Barack Obama; he is just another big business nominee who follows the same agenda as his demented predecessor George Bush.

The “Anglo Saxon” economies are founded on debt and sustained by credit. But our creditors are calling in the loans and we will be forced to abandon lifestyles beyond our means. The United States is almost self-sufficient and can recover from recession but it will take Britain a long time to get out of debt. Borrowing even more money cannot be the answer. We will have to scale down government spending and make a determined effort to pay off our debts. We will certainly have to look at our defence budget and ask ourselves if we really need a new fleet of aircraft carriers and an updated version of the Trident missile system.

Our armed forces are committed to NATO and designed to protect Europe from the Soviet Union. But the old communist empire has been replaced by a democratic Russian Federation and there is no justification for American troops to be stationed here. The use of NATO in Afghanistan is a new departure. Afghanistan does not threaten Europe and it makes no difference to us if one tribal despot or another runs it. The opium excuse cannot be taken seriously. If we really wanted to stop the drug trade we would start arresting dealers instead of turning a blind eye for the sake of political correctness.

So long as we cling to the special relationship with America we will be part of their economic and military empire. We will always be linked to America by ties of blood, language and history, just as we are to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. But until we assert ourselves politically any sort of independence will remain an unfulfilled dream. It’s ironic that those who crave national independence are for the most part content for us to remain an American dependency.

Colin Jordan

I last saw Colin Jordan in Leyton Town Hall in 1965 at a Labour Party election meeting. He was wearing a raincoat and beret but his disguise did not fool the 62 Group stewards who savagely attacked him. He later explained that they were hitting each other in their efforts to kill him.

It has been said that Colin Jordan put back the so-called far right by a generation with his National Socialist Movement. But his outrageous experiment in political chutzpah only revived an antifascist onslaught that had been raging intermittently since the war. Then, as now, the antifascist thugs were aided and abetted by the government.

The “Spearhead Trial” and his theatrical marriage to Françoise Dior hit the headlines but we should also remember that he was hounded out of his job as a schoolteacher and suffered years of state persecution and several terms of imprisonment.

The National Front eclipsed his movement but he remained an influential figure on the far right until his death on 9th April 2009. He reached a worldwide audience with his books and pamphlets and his brilliantly written bulletin “Gothic Ripples.” His coverage of the 9/11 atrocity was particularly memorable:

Shortly following our last issue in September of last year; there came the spectacular attack on the citadel of America's economic globalism, its World Trade Centre, and on the headquarters of its military arm the Pentagon, in retaliation for America's worldwide interference and influence, including its sponsorship of Israel, the persecutor of the Palestinians
.
George Bush, that puerile performer in the razzmatazz which characterises American presidential politics, was instantly supported in his pitiful display of blusterous bravado by Britain's posturing pygmy of a prime minister, Tony Blair, intent on proving all the promptitude of some Pavlovian poodle to the stimulus provided by his master.  These human twin towers of political trash and trickery hastened to vow vengeance in unison, declaring in duet a world war on 'terrorism', meaning any forceful manifestation of resistance to economic or political or military aggression lacking the seal of approval of the high priests of Anglo-American globalism in their self-righteous domineering of the world through their 'New World Order' of dollar democracy. (Gothic Ripples No 45, March 2002)

CJ always took a worldview and was never a narrow nationalist. In April 2007 he wrote a letter to European Action:

Although, while enthusiastic for European solidarity, differing from you on the form it should take, I may perhaps in agreeing with you regarding most else be allowed to reminisce a little, at 83, on some past events conceivably of interest to your readers.

I was present in 1945 at the packed reunion organized by the 18B Detainees Fund when Sir Oswald Mosley made his dramatic entrance by the fire escape, and I was at Jeffrey Hamm’s Denison hall, Victoria, meeting about the same time, of his British League of Ex-Servicemen, of which I was a member.

I vividly recall his Ridley Road meetings in respect of which he was subsequently prosecuted for bouncing trouble-makers with well-chosen words, ‘The pale, pink palpitating pansies with the long hair and the painted toenails cry, “We don’t want fascism here.”  We say we don’t want Jewish communism here.’

In the early 1950s with the onset of mass coloured immigration, Cyril Osborne (MP for Louth), the Union Movement and my group the White Defence League, were the only elements foreseeing its calamitous portent and denouncing it.

In those days, Jeffrey Hamm lived in Princedale Road, Notting Hill, a short distance from the premises of the White Defence League.

Your magazine is attractively produced with very interesting contents and your loyalty to your origins commendable in these days of shifting policies.

Good wishes, Colin Jordan

CJ never condoned the murder of six million Jews because he saw it as part of the avoidable wartime slaughter of 30 million civilians. An argument supported by the respectable columnist and historian Pat Buchanan in his latest book “Churchill, Hitler and the unnecessary war.”

His anti-Zionist views were anathema in the Sixties but today they are freely discussed in The Guardian and The Independent.  People throughout the world used to support Israel because the Jews had suffered so much during the war. But with every Israeli attack on her neighbours the Zionists lose credibility. Only in America is Israel automatically supported.

The Guardian published a scurrilous obituary written by the professional antifascist Gerry Gable. The rest of the papers followed with equally distorted accounts. But Colin Jordan was never involved in arson attacks on synagogues as some of them alleged. For the truth about CJ and Gable see Alexander Baron’s factual biography:

Colin Jordan is survived by his partner Julianna Safrany.

Following World War 11, they resorted to military aggression to make an entire nation homeless under the pretext of Jewish suffering. They sent migrants from Europe, the United States and other parts of the world in order to establish a totally racist government in the occupied Palestine. In fact, in compensation for the dire consequences of racism in Europe, they helped bring to power the most cruel and repressive racist regime in Palestine. It is all the more regrettable that a number of western governments and the United States have committed themselves to defend those racist perpetrators of genocide, while the awakened, conscious and free-minded peoples of the world condemn aggression, brutalities and bombardments of civilians of Gaza.

Ladies and gentlemen: What are the root causes of US attacks against Iraq, or invasion of Afghanistan? Was the motive behind the invasion of Iraq anything other than the arrogance of the then-US administration and the mounting pressures… to expand their sphere of influence, seeking the interest of giant arms manufacturing companies, affecting another culture with thousands of years of historical background, eliminating potential and practical threats of Muslim countries against the Zionist regime? Or, to control and plunder energy resources of the Iraqi people. Why indeed were almost a million people killed and injured, and a few more millions were displaced and became homeless? Why indeed have the Iraqi people suffered enormous losses amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars?… Wasn’t the military action against Iraq planned by the Zionists and their allies in the then-US administration, in complicity with the arms manufacturing companies, and the owners of the world.

The United States and its allies not only have failed to contain the production of drugs in Afghanistan, but also the illicit cultivation of narcotics in the course of their presence. The basic question is what was the responsibility of the then-US administration and its allies? Did they represent countries of the world? Have they been authorized on behalf of the people of the world to interfere in all parts of the globe, and of course mostly in our region? Aren’t these measures a clear infringement on the dignity and independence of nations? Ladies and gentlemen: Who is responsible for the current global economic crisis? Where did the crisis start from?  From Africa?  From Asia?  Or was it the United States? Dear friends, today, the human community is facing a kind of racism that has tarnished the image of humanity. In the beginning of the third millennium, the word Zionism personifies racism that falsely resorts to religion, and abuses religious sentiments to hide their hateful and ugly faces. However it is the world’s powers and those who control huge economic resources and interests in the world, and mobilize all their resources, economic and political influence, and world media to render support in vain to the Zionist regime…

Cutting costs

When the Tories form the next government they will be faced with massive debts incurred by the disastrous Gordon Brown. So far they have not indicated how they will get Britain out of the red. Every penny will have to be paid back but the key to our survival is to reduce government spending as much as possible. We cannot abandon the National Health Service or let pensioners starve but we can make economies.

Under Tony Blair and his equally vainglorious successor Britain played a supporting role to the Americans and got involved in wars with no British interest. In 1999 we sent the RAF to bomb Belgrade the historic capital city of our wartime Serbian allies. We also helped Albanian separatists to take over the Serbian province of Kosovo. There was no sense in this war but America decreed that President Milosovic was an enemy so we went in with all guns blazing.

Then we helped America to destroy Iraq by bombing military and civilian targets. We will probably never know how many people were killed in this unjustified war.
The Opinion Research Business survey reports 1,033,000 but records have been destroyed along with official buildings, hospitals, mosques and churches.

Now we are fighting and dying against an invisible enemy that can melt into the general population of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nobody thinks that we can win this war but our top brass are still waffling about “staying till the job is done.”

These wars have nothing to do with Britain but they have cost us hundreds of lives and billions upon billions of pounds. To pay for them we have borrowed money from the international banks and diverted funds from essential services at home. We have bankrupted our country so that clowns like Tony Blair and Gordon Brown can play at being great statesmen.

Our armed forces should be redeployed to patrol our borders to keep out illegal immigrants. We should immediately withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan and cancel the upgrade of Trident missiles that are effectively under American control. We should also think about our fleet. It’s nice to have aircraft carriers flying the flag in foreign parts if we can afford it. We must trim our defence budget to suit requirements and stop pretending to be a world power.

The major states of Europe are comparably in population and GDP to Britain but they are far less ready to get involved in American imperial adventures. Their citizens do not lay awake all night worrying about their place in the world. They are content to be historic European nations that have had their share of imperial glory and have grown out of it. We must make the same emotional adjustment and start living within our means. The next generation will not thank us for saddling them with even more debt.

Views on the news

The government’s failed bid to restrict the number of Gurkhas allowed into Britain was right. There’s no doubt that they are excellent soldiers who have fought bravely for Britain for the last two hundred years. But Nepal is a desperately poor country and most of its 30 million people would be better off here. We cannot solve the economic problems of the Third World by taking them all in. A lot of sentimental nonsense has been spoken about how loyal the Gurkhas are to Britain. But the fact is that they are mercenary soldiers in the pay of a foreign country. The British Army has always had large numbers of volunteers from around the world. At present 10% of our soldiers were born abroad. We cannot allow former soldiers and their dependents to come to Britain simply because they took the Queen’s shilling. We should ensure that military pensions are adequate but we cannot admit unlimited numbers of economic refugees. It’s true that less deserving people are flooding into Britain. But we must start somewhere. This country is broke and can barely feed its own population let alone 36,000 Gurkhas and their dependents.

NATO has at last found itself a legitimate role. American, Dutch and French Special Forces have killed and captured Somali pirates operating off the coast of East Africa. We are wasting our time in Afghanistan backing one side in a tribal war that has raged for over a thousand years. But in the Indian Ocean we are defending British and European interests. It’s true that the Somalis are driven by poverty but that does not give them the right to kill and terrorize merchant seamen. America flooded Somalia with arms and ammunition in the 1970s to counter the genocidal communist regime of Haile Marium Mengistu in neighbouring Ethiopia. Now they have changed sides and are backing the Ethiopians against the Islamic insurgents in Somalia. Over thirty years of incessant warfare has left the region devastated; yet another casualty of shortsighted American foreign policy. NATO was founded to protect Europe against the threat from the east but now the threat is from the south. Instead of provoking the Russians with missiles bases and radar stations on their borders we should restructure the alliance to defend Europe from piracy and infiltration.

The death of an innocent man at the G20 demonstration has left a big question mark over the police. There is plenty of filmed evidence of police brutality against demonstrators. A burly cop smacks a young woman across the face and then hits her legs with a baton. Another cop hits a man in the face with a riot shield. Not the image of the friendly British copper that we cherish. The police had been wound up by weeks of press speculation and government paranoia about “terrorism.” It’s not surprising that somebody died during the demo. The police do a difficult job and for the most part they do it well. But the politicization of the police that started under Margaret Thatcher has now reached the point where they see themselves as the defenders of the regime in power rather than the guardians of the people. Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson please take note.

Gordon Brown’s botched attempt at reforming MP’s expenses will not be the end of the matter. Their members abuse all parliamentary payment systems including those of the United States and the EU. It doesn’t matter how much we pay our representatives, they will always falsify their expenses. When we tried letting bankers police themselves they awarded themselves enormous bonuses and pensions as their banks fell into insolvency.  Parliamentarians are just as corrupt and greedy. It would be satisfying to hang a few cheating MPs but we will have to limit ourselves to making an example of the worst offenders. They should be immediately fired and lose all pension rights. They should then be prosecuted for fraud and be forced to repay every penny stolen from the public purse. This would not wipe out the problem but it would encourage the others. As we enter the age of austerity fiddling of expenses must be taken more seriously.

The government has scrapped plans to build three new prisons each capable of holding 2,500 inmates. There are 11,000 foreign prisoners out of a total British prison population of 81,000 - mostly from Jamaica, Nigeria and Pakistan. If we deported them we would have enough prison space for our own criminals. There is no point in locking up foreign offenders in British prisons. They should be handed over to their own people to be dealt with. If their homelands have harsher penalties than we allow that is not our business. We need a law that automatically deports foreign offenders. It’s no good leaving it to our senile judges who dish out anti-social behaviour orders for the foulest of crimes. It would also send the message that Britain is no longer a soft touch for lowlifes, drug dealers, dole scroungers and bogus asylum seekers.

The murder and abuse of children in the London borough of Haringey has reached new depths of depravity. It is human nature to protect children and a vile perversion to subject them to violence. The people responsible did not come from primitive parts of the world; they are members of the so-called master race. As usual the local social workers and police are trying to shift the blame. Despite being listed as children at risk these little tots were left in the care of moral defectives. There was a time when criminals were treated too harshly. But years of liberal reform have done away with the death penalty and reduced prison sentences. No doubt the liberal reformers thought that the criminal classes would respond by mending their ways. But instead we have descended into the nightmare of the inner cities. Can anyone make a convincing case for keeping these cruel and sadistic creatures alive?  Unfortunately we cannot trust parents to bring up children without regular and compulsory monitoring. Better to have state interference than allowing another innocent child be tortured and violated. The state makes sure that we are fit to drive; it should also make sure that we are fit to raise children.
